As we take a look back at the first half of the PGA TOUR season, one can't help but notice the tremendous amount of success last year's Merrill Lynch Shootout participants have enjoyed in 2007.
Beginning with Fred Funk's remarkable win at the inaugural Mayakoba Golf Classic in February and continuing with Mark Calcavecchia's victory two weeks later at the PODS Championship, 2006 Shootout participants started the PGA TOUR season on fire. Funk's win south of the border made him only the second player to win on the PGA TOUR after winning on the Champions Tour while Calcavecchia's narrow victory gave him career victory number 13 and his fourth Top 10 of the year.
Success continued into the spring as Texas native, Scott Verplank earned a hometown victory at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship. Two weeks ago, victory was captured again on Texas soil as Rory Sabbatini was victorious at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. The emotional victory for Verplank was his third Top 10 finish of the young season while Sabbatini's win elevated him to fifth on the current money list.
As the second half of the PGA TOUR calendar unfolds, we can only wonder who will be the next Merrill Lynch Shootout participant to prevail! |
